My Life … In a Nutshell

I became interested in bodybuilding around 1987 when I had an interest in BMX. I was reading a BMX book and it was recommended that weight training would make you a stronger rider. It mentioned a couple of books to find in the library. So of I went to my local library where I found Vince Girondas 'Unleashing The Wild Physique'. As soon as I opened the book and saw all the bodybuilders, that was it, something clicked and I knew that's I wanted to look like! Seeing pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Serge Nubret Mohamed Makkawy etc just amazed me! So I started to buy the magazines and my early inspirations became Rich Gaspari and Tom Platz.

It still took me a couple of years to pluck up enough courage to actually go to a gym as I was too nervous to go! But a gym was just about to open in my local town of Romford. So my brother and I went along and joined up. I was now a member of Everybodies Gym (owned by Malcolm Brown an IFBB pro). I seemed quite a natural at it as after only a few weeks Malcolm and the instructor Scott Thake noticed the gains I was making, and I was getting a lot stronger too especially the legs. After about six months training I was already squatting 355 pounds and I was only sixteen.

After a couple of years training Malcolm and Scott kept encouraging me to enter a natural junior competition. I always read in the magazines how a lot of the top bodybuilders entered and won their first show, so that was my goal. I wanted to enter and win my first show. So with the guidance of Malcolm and Scott I went on  a twelve week diet and entered my first show at 19 years old, the 1991 ANB (Association of Natural Bodybuilders) South East, entering the Junior class (under 21's). As I was a very shy teenager I wondered how I would deal with walking on stage with fake tan, oil and skimpy little posing trunks! But the feeling was unreal! As soon as I stepped on stage it felt like I was meant to be there, it was a great feeling. And I achieved my goal, I was the South East Junior champion! I qualified for the British championships later on in the year where I placed third.

The following year (1992)  was my last year as a junior and my goal was to be Junior British champion. Nothing was going to stop me, so I trained like I was possessed! I won the Junior South East again, so it was on to the 'Britain'. As soon as I was there I was so confident that I felt unbeatable.  I won the show, Junior Mr Britain what a feeling that was! Then I was invited to compete in the European championships in Holland  which I also won!

I then had a four year break before entering in the adult classes. The first show I decided to do was the 1996 ANB South East and enter the heavyweight class (over 78kg). I thought I would break into the heavyweights gently expecting about three or four people in my class. I asked how many in my class. Fourteen! Damn, I have my work cut out now I thought! I went on to win the class and the overall which was a fantastic result. I then went on to place fourth in the Britain.

In 1998 I entered the ANB Central Britain which I won and then went on to place second in the Britain. I was invited to compete in the European Championships in Belgium, which was a great opportunity for me, so I pulled out all the stops and I won! Unreal!

I then waited untill 2000 to compete again, winning the ANB South East Heavyweights and Overall titles. I then competed in the Britain where I placed fourth. I had no motivation for the final, didn't want to be there, and I shouldn't of competed really. So I vowed never to compete again unless I really wanted it.

The wait was five years! I had injuries, lost motivation totally, just couldn't get into my training so I had six months off training which was the best thing I could of ever done. After that my training got back on track, making great progress. So I decided to make my come back at the BNBF Central Championships in 2005. There was a lot of interest on the internet regarding my come back and I really felt the pressure! The last few weeks before the show I was a nightmare, really stressing over how I looked! Anyway I entered the show and won the heavyweights and overall making a great impact which is just what I wanted!

I went on to compete in the Britain where I placed third. I wasn't happy with how I looked at all. I lost a fair bit of muscle leading up to the show through over dieting. But hey, you live and learn!

After the show I was invited to compete in the World Championships in New York! I couldn't believe it! I now had the chance to rectify my mistakes and enter the Worlds at my all time best. This I did do, gaining back some of my lost muscle and getting in even better condition. This resulted in me winning the heavyweight class. I was now the INBF Heavyweight World Champion! A dream come true.

On to the 2006 season. My first show was the BNBF Britain. I didn't have to qualify for this due to the Worlds in 2005. I placed 2nd in this show at my biggest ever, I just didn't hit my condition spot on. I was a little disappointed but was over the moon that the BNBF had faith in me to invite me to the Natural Mr Universe in Los Angeles. A dream come true for me as it is a place I had always wanted to visit since I was young. The result? I won! Not only my class but the overall which resulted in me gaining my pro card which was my goals for many years.

So what does the future hold? Well, for the 2007 season I have become a judge for the BNBF. I have had two guest posing spots at the BNBF Welsh and Northern Championships, and also have had a photo shoot for the cover of Martina Cole's new novel 'Faces' and also for the womens magazine Cosmopolitan.

FAVOURITE MOMENT IN MY BODYBUILDING CAREER

It has to be the 1992 season as a junior.Winning the Junior South East and meeting Mike Williams who won the heavyweights was fantastic. He gave me so much encouragment backstage and made me feel on top of the world! He became my inspiration in the natural bodybuilding world and he still encourages me a lot now.

Then going on to win the Junior Britain and getting invited to the European championships in Holland. I was told not to expect to win as the Dutch were right into their bodybuilding. That just fired me up even more! No way was I going to lose my last competition as a junior! I went on to win and prove people wrong!

I remember sitting in a burger bar a couple of days after the European (as you do!) with my girlfriend at the time and it hit me what I had just achieved! I had a couple of tears in my eyes with emotion and she laughed! Hee hee.

In 1996, I was entering the heavyweights at the ANB South East  and was working out who my main competition was. I remember saying to my brother Andy “well I don’t need to worry about Peter Chown” as he was a junior a couple of years ago! Wrong! Pete was awesome; he destroyed everyone! The shots of his quads are from that show. Backstage he stripped down and made me look like I never dieted! Anyway Pete walked it that day and won the overall. We became good friends after that and he inspired me to get at lean as possible

British Natural Champion.

The build-up to Peter Chown’s competitive return in 2005 was akin to something you’d see in Hollywood when an actor returns after a 10 year hiatus. Needless to say, the expectation reached fever-pitch and his on-line “prime-time” photo’s on his own website had created an almost Mythological-status around him, as we all gasped at the condition, mass and granite-hard muscle on display.
Before 2004 when I first met peter in person, he was somewhat of an enigma to me. If you have been a fan of natural body building and followed the sport as I have since 1998, you would have been well-aware of Peter’s reputation within the sport. If you weren’t then you should have done your research and made sure you knew all about the man with the freaky legs. Pete was winning British titles as a junior, with a finely-honed physique probably unsurpassed within those ranks until Jay Hollingsworth appeared out of nowhere this year. Competing in the halcyon days of ANB heavyweights at the same time as such luminaries as Palmer, Davies, Holder, Aurelius, Averkiou, Perry et al served to remind us that here was a man capable of being the very best. Resplendent with amazing quadriceps, feathered, separated and striated beyond belief, huge hamstrings and monster calves, it was always said of Pete that his upper body lagged behind his show-stopping lower-half.
With this in mind, all those present at Aylesbury in 2005 at the BNBF Central championships waited with baited breath to see if the man could live up to the legend. Had he corrected the imbalance? Were his legs really that freaky? What about his condition, could he re-create former glories?
As peter walked out, all doubts were laid to rest. Here was an icon of natural body building, a physique from the halcyon days returning to claim what is rightfully his.

I was just a girl stuck in a bit of a rut, living in the Middle East, looking for bodybuilding inspiration and information seeing as I was thinking of competing one day.  I stumbled across Pete's website.....and was gobsmacked.  Gobsmacked by his incredible physique, the positive tone of his website and his incredibly inspiring achievements and titles.  Little did I know after following his site for months and signing his guest book that 'Mr U' would actually take the time to drop me an email thanking me for signing his guest book.  A little while later I stumbled across this incredible gentleman once again only to find that a mutual friend of our who was competing in the Scottish Champs was organising a place for us all to stay and that I was going to be sharing living space with this bodybuilding legend!  We hit it off straight away and decided to have a few training sessions together on a trip to London, particularly because I was preparing for the BNBF Welsh and Northern Champs.  We hit Muscle Limits in Brimsdown - I was armed with enthusiasm and determination and Peter with many a bodybuilding training trick up his sleeve and to say that those few training sessions were mind blowing would be an understatement.  I trained harder than I ever have, I learnt so much but one thing that really impended upon me is the respect that people have for Peter wherever he goes.  He is not only a legend in the natural bodybuilding world but he is a true down to earth man with a deeply soulful spirit and a willingness to help people with such a genuine demeanour.  His success is not only in his genetics - it's in his attitude and his knowledge which has taken Peter more than 15 years to acquire.  He is not only a top Personal Trainer - he lives and breathes his sport as its his passion and I couldn't think of anyone better or anyone nicer to help the next legend into their victory.

And speaking of victory, I have a lot to thank Peter for as I am now the 2007 Northern Physique Champion.

Thank you Peter for your guidance, your advice but most of all your incredible friendship.  What you have to offer your clients and friends is second to none.  In one word, irreplaceable.
